Smitherman Slugs Braves in Finale:L, 4-2

Stephen Smitherman continued his onslaught on Braves pitching as he slugged his third homer and drove in his 10th run of the series in a 4-2 win over the Braves in front of 4,527 at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Atlanta Brave John Thomson was making a rehab start as he left the game in the second inning with what he described as "something that did not feel right." He has been bothered by shoulder stiffness since leaving a July 9th start for the Atlanta Braves. Sean White (4-4, 4,26 ERA) entered the game for Thompson and allowed the 2-run homer to Smitherman absorbing his fourth loss of the season. Dan Smith was brilliant in relief striking out 6 of the 7 batters he faced.

Offensively the Braves collected four (2 doubles, 2 triples) extra base hits but were only able to score two runs. They left the bases loaded in the first as Burrus grounded out to end the frame. The Braves were held hitless from the 4th to the eighth by the BayBears staff. Jarrod Saltalamacchia collected his first triple of the season but was left stranded when Canizares struck out to end the third.

The Braves start up a five game set in Pearl Mississippi, Alabama at Trustmark Park as they take on the Carolina Mudcats, the AA Affiliate of the Florida Marlins, in the series opener. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT). The Braves are scheduled to send LHP Francisely Bueno (1-4, 3.69 ERA) to the hill while the Mudcats are scheduled to counter with RHP James Russ (5-8, 3.75 ERA). Braves Lose Game Two of Series: L, 6-1

BayBears cather Colt Morton had a memorable outing against the Braves behind the plate tonight as he finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs on two homeruns in front of an announced crowd of 2,085 at Hank Aaron Stadium. While Morton was hitting balls out, BayBears starter Jack Cassel was mowing down Braves. Cassel (2-0, 2.01 ERA) allowed just one run to the Braves while retiring 10 of the last 11 he faced including eight straight at one point. Cassel has not allowed more than two runs in any of his five starts this season.

With a 30 minute delay to start the game it appeared the Braves were in slow motion as they were unable to get a runner past first base after the fourth inning. Luis Hernandez was the lone bright spot offensively for the Braves as he continued his torrid pace (SEE HIT STREAKS BELOW) for the last 4 games. The Braves best chance offensively was in the fourth but Joshua Arteaga grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded to end the scoring threat.

The game was put out of reach as Eric Schmitt entered the game in relief of Chris Waters in the seventh as he inherited two runners. Colt Morton lifted a 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for his 2nd homerun of the night giving the BayBears their final 6-1 margin. His first homerun gave the BayBears a 2-1 lead in the 5th.

The Braves were befuddled by Ross Ohlendorf through six innings as he held the Braves to just one hit and one baserunner from the 2nd through the 6th innings. He then allowed a leadoff single up the middle by Josh Burrus before Jones belted the two-run blast five pitches later.

Braves Take Series Finale in Extras: W, 8-4

The Braves squandered a four-run lead as Huntsville rallied for four runs off of Ryan Basner in the eighth inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Braves, however, rallied for four in the 10th to take the series and win their third straight against the Stars in front of an announced crowd of 1,311 at Joe Davis Stadium.

Dan Smith (0-2, 5.40 ERA) was brilliant before exiting as he tossed five hitless innings against Huntsville. Smith was replacing Matt Wright, who was promoted to Richmond two days ago. (He was shelled in his first start allowing 10 runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings).

Glenn Tucker and Jose Ascanio pitched perfect innings of relief in the ninth and tenth after Basner's trouble in the eighth. It all started with a pair of walks and then with two outs the Stars got an RBI single by Callix Crabbe and a 3-run homer by Drew Anderson to tie it at 4-4.

The Braves other runs came from a first inning two-run homerun by Brandon Jones...an RBI single by Josh Burrus...and a solo Homerun by Jarrod Saltalamacchia (his first since May 2nd).

The Braves enjoy an off day on Monday before starting up a five game set in Pearl, Mississippi at Trustmark Park as they take on the Tennessee Smokies, the AA Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the series opener. Matt Harrison (1-2, 3,91 ERA) tossed seven shutout innings Saturday night helping lead the Braves to their second straight win over the Huntsville Stars in front of an announced crowd of 5,708 at Joe Davis Stadium. Harrison picked up his first AA win of the season, limiting Huntsville to 5 hits while striking out three. Harrison faced 5 over the minimum while retiring 18 of the 20 batters he faced after the leadoff triple by Steve Moss.

The Braves bullpen continued their mastery of the Stars and their recent success in the month of July with two perfect innings by Ascanio and Schreiber. Schreiber (12) picked up his second save in as many nights. The Braves also extended their scoreless inning streak to 14 innings against Huntsville.

The Braves offense was aggressive in the first inning as Josh Burrus scored on a ball hit to right field by slidung under the tag of Lou Palmisano. Jones tried the same feat on a ball hit by Escobar, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. The other two runs scored on a wild pitch and an RBI fielder's choice hit into by Josh Burrus.

The Stars went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position as they stranded a leadoff triple in the first and a leadoff double in the second.

Serrano Helps Braves End Slide: W, 3-1

Ray Serrano belted his first homerun of the season in the second inning helping the Braves end a 10-game road losing streak and an overall 3-game losing skid in front of 5,790 at Joe Davis Stadium. Serrano finished 2-for-4 on the night ending a slump in which he was 1 for his last 29 at the plate.

Serrano's performance at the plate almost overshadowed the start by Anthony Lerew. Lerew (2-2, 2.00 ERA) allowed just one unearned run in the fourth while striking out a season high 5 and only giving three hits.

The Braves pen came into the night having allowed just 3 earned runs in the month of July. They made it stay that way: Santos pitched a perfect eighth while Zach Schreiber made it interesting in the ninth issuing two one-out walks before striking out the final two batters notching his 11th save on the season.

The Braves continue a five game set in Hunstville Alabama at Joe Davis Stadium as they take on the Huntsville Stars, the AA Affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, in game four of the series. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT). Braves Set Another Record: L, 3-1

The Braves set a new franchise record by losing their 10th straight road game on the season falling to the Huntsville Stars 3-1 in front of 1,630 fans at Joe Davis Stadium. Jorge De La Rosa (2-1, 1.89 ERA) was making his fourth rehab start for the Stars and he limited the Braves to just one unearned run in the fourth. He pitched 6 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking just one. The Stars have not allowed a single earned run in the first two games of the series.

The Braves lone offensive outburst was by Brandon Jones as he finished 3-for-3 with a double and two singles along with the Braves lone RBI which came in the fourth. Chris Waters (5-8, 4.15 ERA) retired the first seven batters he faced but then made one mistake pitch to Steve Moss in the third as he deposited the 2-1 pitch over the left field wall.

The Braves best offensive chance came in the seventh as they collected two singles by the first two batters...unfortunately Escobar was caught stealing and Jones was picked off at first. The Braves were unable to get a baserunner past second base after the fourth. The Braves hit into two more double plays on the night, which gives them as many double plays as games played on the season (91).

The Braves continue a five game set in Hunstville Alabama at Joe Davis Stadium as they take on the Huntsville Stars, the AA Affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, in game three of the series. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT). Waters also managed to get by without allowing a homerun for just the sixth time in his 17 starts this season. Ironically Waters' last win was also a 1-0 decision on June 26th against Birmingham. The Braves also dropped their team ERA below 4.00 for the first time since May 3 (3.97).

The Braves ended a five-game losing skid of one-run games with their 1-0 victory Thursday night and also tossed their eighth shutout in the process. The win in game two also marked the first win for the Braves at home on a Thursday. That leaves Wednesday as the only winless day of the week for the Braves at home. The two games lasted a combinend total of 3 1/2 hours, shorter than some 9 inning games the Braves have played this season.

Mike Ekstrom (0-3, 3.86 ERA) was the hard-luck loser tossing a 6-inning complete game while allowing just one run on three hits. The Braves bullpen held the game in check as Ascanio allowed a double to the first batter he faced but then retired the final two. Zach Schreiber pitched the ninth allowing a single but recording a line-out double play to Canizares to end the game, notching his team-leading 10th save of the season.

The Braves continue their five game home stand at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi Wednesday night as they take on the Mobile BayBears, the AA Affiliate of the San Diego Padres, in game four of the series. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT). The Braves are set to send RHP Anthony Lerew (0-2, 3.86 ERA) to the hill in search of his first win while the BayBears are scheduled to counter with RHP Jose Oyervidez (2-8, 4.31ERA).
