Stars Run Streak to 11: W, 6-5

The Huntsville Stars used a three homerun barrage to win their 11th straight home game and seventh straight overall in front of an announced crowd of 1,012. Despite having nothing to play for, the Braves have made all four games of the series close. They have been decided by a total of five runs, and three have been on-run affairs. The Stars are 21-5 in the month of August.

The Braves rallied twice to take the lead in the game only to see Huntsville come back and tie or take the lead back in the bottom half of each inning. Starter Matt Harrison (3-3, 3.28 ERA) watched his team's two-run lead disappear on Brendan Katin's two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth off of new Brave Ralph Roberts. He then gave up a solo shot to Lou Palmisano which gave the Stars the 6-5 decision. Roberts (0-1, 27.00 ERA) was tagged with a blown save and the loss in his second appearance as a MS Brave. He appeared in one game last year tossing 1 and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Braves have now been outhomered 29-9 in the 6th and 8th innings combined and 105-65 overall.

The Braves left 13 men stranded on base while finishing 5 for 16 with runners in scoring position. Joshua Arteaga gave the Braves their first lead with a two-run double in the 6th and then Yunel Escobar gave the Braves back the lead with a two-out two-run single in the 8th. Escobar now has a team-leading 21 two-out RBIs.

Tim Dillard did not factor in the decision as he scattered 9 hits and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) in his 6 innings of work. Matt Yeatman snuck out the win while Joe Valentine secured his 10th save in 13 chances for the Stars.

The Braves will wrap up a five game set in Huntsville, Alabama at Joe Davis Stadium as they take on the Huntsville Stars, the AA Affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, in the series finale. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT) live from Joe Davis Stadium. The Braves are scheduled to send LHP Dan Smith (3-6, 3.13 ERA) to the hill, while the Stars are scheduled to counter with LHP Manny Parra (2-0, 3.55 ERA). Yovani Gallardo Handcuffs Braves: W, 4-2

The Braves were shut down Sunday night as Yovani Gallardo tossed eight scoreless two-hit innings while facing just two over the minimum. Gallardo (5-2, 1.70 ERA) was chased from the ballgame in the 9th inning as Luis Hernandez reached on a pinch-hit walk and later scored on Mike Rozema's 2nd triple of the series. Rozema came home on a wild pitch as he slid under the tag of Gallardo. Onil Joseph then followed with a single which brought in Travis Phelps. Phelps allowed a single to Josh Burrus but struck out two including Michael Rosamond with the tying run at 1st base. Phelps earned his 5th save of the season.

Chris Waters (7-14, 5.08 ERA) was touched up in the first inning for his league-leading 24th Homerun by Ryan Braun. He did avoid walking two batters for the first time this season but his only walk of the game led to a three-run inning in the 4th as Steve Moss doubled in a pair of runs over the head of center fielder Matt Young. Braves Lose 4th Straight to Mobile: L, 6-4

The Braves have found Wednesday nights at home a challenging task this season. The BayBears picked up a 6-4 win over the Braves dropping them to 0-7 on Wednesday nights in front of an announced crowd of 2,932 at Trustmark Park. The Braves had the tying run at first as Michael Rosamond lined out to right field to end the game and send the Braves to the series finale needing a win to avoid their first ever 5-game sweep at home. (The Braves only other 5-game sweep came in Montgomery June 29-July3)

Matt Harrison (3-3, 3.22 ERA) was victimized by a two-out two-run double by pitcher Jose Oyervidez in the 3-run 4th inning. Two of the three runs were unearned as Eddie Perez (appearing in his first game since May 5th) bobbled a ground ball that would have ended the inning. Oyervidez (6-11, 3.82 ERA) scattered seven hits while striking out seven and giving up a pair of runs in his six innings of work.

Ray Serrano provided a nice offensive spark with his 2nd Homerun of the season, a lead off shot to left-center in the 5th inning. He added an RBI groundout in the 7th. Onil Joseph extended his hit streak to 5 straight games with a 3-for-4 night at the plate and finished with two RBIs as he brought the Braves to within one in the eighth with his two-out single. Matt Young finally collected his first base-hit as a Brave as he singled in his first two at-bats and walked in his final two. He had 71 walks at Myrtle Beach.

BayBears Clinch Series with Shutout: L, 1-0

The Braves second-half struggles continued Tuesday night as Chris Waters was victimized by a two-out walk and two-out error in the 7th inning which led to the only run of the game. Pitcher Sean Thompson singled home Drew Macias to plate the only run of the game (an unearned run) as the BayBears beat the Braves 1-0 in front of an announced crowd of 2,949 at Trustmark Park.

The Braves managed to get the tying run to 3rd base in each of the last 3 innings but all three times the Braves were denied. Arteaga was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch in the 7th...Yunel Escobar struck out to end the 8th with runners at 1st and 3rd...and Ray Serrano was taken down on a questionable called third strike with runners at the corners to end the game.

Chris Waters (7-13, 5.01 ERA) was the hard-luck loser as he delivered his best outing since July 6th, the Braves bats were just unable to pick him up as they finished 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded 6 base runners. Waters did manage to avoid gving up a Homerun but was tagged with his Southern League leading 13th loss of the season. On a bright note, Joey Devine tossed two perfect innings of relief again while tossing his 10th straight strikeout (5 at TEN-[8.19], 5 vs MOB-[8.22]).

Braves Unable to Cash In Mistakes: L, 6-2

Despite a record-tying 5 errors by the BayBears the Braves were unable to overcome a three-run 4th inning as the BayBears cruised to a 6-2 win in front of an announced crowd of 3,278 at Trustmark Park.

The Braves got on the board early in the first inning as new Brave Matt Young chopped a ball back to the mound and his speed forced Jack Cassel to make a hurried throw wide of first. Young's speed allowed him to take third and he scored one batter later on a Yunel Escobar ground out. Escobar reached base on the second error of the inning but was caught stealing during the next at-bat as Terrazas and Rosamond struck out to end the threat.

The BayBears got their offense going against spot starter Eric Schmitt in the 4th inning as Sinisi launched his 7th Homerun of the season a one-out shot into the Cellular South Cafe'. Schmitt then allowed a single and double before giving up a two-out two-run single to Drew Macias to cap the scoring in the inning. The BayBears added three more runs on two sacrifice flys and an RBI single in the 7th and 9th innings.

The Braves will continue a five game set in Pearl, Mississippi at Trustmark Park as they take on the Mobile BayBears, the AA Affiliate of the San Diego Padres, in game three of the series. Braves Shutout in Series Opener: L, 4-0

The Braves were shutdown and shutout by Mike Ekstrom as he tossed a complete game shutout against the Braves for his first win of the season in front of a Sunday night crowd of 3,493 at Trustmark Park. Ekstrom, (1-7, 4.02 ERA) winless on the season before Sunday's game, scattered eight hits and struck out five.

Sean White (4-6, 4.75 ERA), making his first start since June 9th looked pretty good. His only problem was the BayBears strung together their hits instead of having them scattered throughout his 6 and 2/3 innings.

The lone bright spot offensively was Ivan Terrazas as he continued his assault on Southern Leauge pitching with a 3-for-4 performance raising his season average up to (11-22, .500). Glenn Tucker was the pitching bright spot out of the pen as he retired all seven batters he faced in 2 and 1/3 innings of work.

The Braves hit into an inning ending double play in the 1st and 9th innings to squash any kind of rally against the BayBears. The Braves also finished 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 6 men stranded including the bases loaded in the 4th.

The Braves will continue a five game set in Pearl, Mississippi at Trustmark Park as they take on the Mobile BayBears, the AA Affiliate of the San Diego Padres, in game two of the series. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT). The Braves are scheduled to send LHP Francisely Bueno (1-6, 3.75 ERA) to the hill, while the BayBears are scheduled to counter with RHP Jack Cassel (4-2, 2.47 ERA). Braves Blow Series Opener: L, 3-2 (10)

The Braves belted a pair of solo homeruns in the 1st and 9th innings against the Tennessee Smokies but were unable to finish the job as Tennessee rallied in the bottom of the 9th and 10th for a 3-2 series opening win in front of 2,410 at Smokies Park.

Zach Schreiber blew just his second save of the season as Alberton Gonzalez delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the game in the 9th. The inning was set up by Schreiber as he hit the first batter on an 0-2 count. He then sent him to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Avlas and Cota both struck out before he issued another wild pitch sending Richard to 3rd base. Schreiber then issued a two-out walk to Garrabrants to bring up Gonzalez.

In the 10th inning, Glenn Tucker allowed a leadoff single and hit a batter to start the 10th before loading up the bases on a throwing error. Pinch hitter, Wilkin Castillo, came through with the sacrifice fly to end the game and continue the recent misery of the Braves.

Onil Joseph led off the game with his 3rd homerun of the season, all of which have been solo homers. Josh Burrus belted his 2nd of the season with one out in the 9th to stake the Braves to a 2-1 lead before the bullpen blew it in the 9th and 10th.

Braves Blow 6-0 Lead to Stars: L, 7-6

The Braves staked Dan Smith to a 6-0 lead in the first five innings before the Huntsville Stars rallied for seven unanswered runs against the Braves bullpen to win 7-6 in front of a crowd of 2,736 at Trustmark Park. That coupled with Thursday-Saturday numbers and the Braves set a new four-day record of 21,008 shattering the old record set last season of 18,160 (June 16th - June 19th)

The loss ruined another great outing by Dan Smith (3-6, 3.10 ERA) as he limited the Stars to 2 hits while pitching around three walks. Smith has now allowed just one earned run in his last 28 1/3 innings of work, while striking out 46 batters and walking just 11. Ray Serrano ended an 0-6 skid with a pair of two-run singles in the first half of the game. The Braves defense also turned a record 4 double plays on the afternoon to keep the game from getting even farther out of hand.

Sean White (4-5, 4.70 ERA) was dealt the loss in relief as he had by far his worst outing in over a month giving up 6 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks. The Braves finished the series 10-for-39 with runners in scoring position while the Stars finished at 11-for-46.

The Braves will travel to Tennessee on their off day on Monday before starting up a five game set in Sevierville, Tennessee at Smokies Park as they take on the Tennessee Smokies, the AA Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the series opener. The Braves used a two-run rally in 7th to post a 4-2 win over the Huntsville Stars in front of another new record crowd of 7,652 at Trustmark Park. Yunel Escobar delivered the deciding blow with a two-out bases loaded single to right driving in two...Escobar was caught trying to stretch a single into a double. Luis Hernandez was the Player of the Game as he finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. The top 4 in the order Saturday night each got a hit after last night failing to record even one single.
Matt Harrison (3-2, 3.04 ERA) was robbed of a chance at his 4th win as Glenn Tucker (2-3, 3.79 ERA) was charged with a blown save but also picked up the win in relief. Zach Schreiber pitched the final two innings striking out five and picking up his 18th save in 19 chances.

CHIPPER REHABBING: Chipper Jones finished 1 for 2 on the night with a run scored. He finished 1-6 in his two rehab starts also with one error at 3rd base. He exited after his single in the 4th inning.

Stars Spoil Chipper's Debut: L, 4-3

The Braves fell one run shy in their comeback attempt as the Huntsville Stars won the series with a 4-3 win in front of a new record crowd of 7,577 at Trustmark Park. The previous record was 7,062 which was set on Opening night last season.

His high pitch count (54 pitches) left him unable to get to the 3rd inning.

Yovanni Gallardo (3-2, 1.44 ERA) was sensational for the Stars as he limited the Braves to just 1 earned run on 4 hits and retired 10 in a row at one point before leaving in the 7th inning.

CHIPPER REHABBING: Chipper Jones is scheduled to make one more rehab start with the MS Braves Saturday night (8.12) at Trustmark Park. Braves Strike Out Biscuits: W, 6-3

Lefty Dan Smith struck out a season-high 12 Biscuits and the Braves added 6 runs of support in their first ever series-clinching win at Riverwalk Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 2,681 at Riverwalk Stadium. Sean White tossed the final three innings to notch his 1st save of the season.

The Braves offense stood strong despite striking out a dozen times as well. Brandon Jones launched his 7th homerun of the season in the 4th to give the Braves a 2-0 lead. Mike Rozema added an RBI groundout an inning later to make it 3-0. Josh Burrus finished 3-4 while Brandon Jones finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Yunel Escobar made his first appearance since injuring his elbow in the Carolina series and went 1 -for-2 with 2 runs scored and some dynamic plays at 2nd base. Ironically, he was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat.

The only run Dan Smith allowed was an unearned run in the fifth that came home to score on a wild pitch. Sean White gave up two runs on three hits in his three innings of work.

Biscuits starter, Mitch Talbot was overshadowed by Smith as he struck out 11 batters while allowing three runs in 7 innings of work. Every game this season between the Braves and Biscuits has been decided by three runs or less.

Then in the 9th inning, Ruggiano reached on an error by Arteaga, advanced to 2nd base with a steal and to 3rd on a throwing error by Saltalamacchia. Schreiber then struck out Longoria and got the game-ending ground out from Brignac to close the door.

Biscuits Walk Off in Extras: W, 9-8

Two weeks ago Justin Ruggiano, Evan Longoria and Patrick Breen were all in different uniforms. Sunday night they all contributed with homeruns for the Biscuits including Ruggiano's walk-off blast in the 10th giving the Biscuits a 9-8 win in front of an announced crowd of 3,568 at Riverwalk Stadium.

That performance overshadowed what the Braves were able to accomplish at the plate, as they rallied from a pair of three-run deficits to take an 8-6 lead in the eighth on Josh Burrus' first homerun of the season, a grand slam down the left field line (which was the 3rd Slam for the Braves this season).

Kyle Davies (0-0, 7.20 ERA) was less than spectacular giving up a 2-run Homerun to Longoria in the 2nd and a pair of RBI hits in the 3rd. He left trailing 4-1. Lerew (4-2, 2.03 ERA) had his worst outing in over a month as he gave up a two-run homerun to Breen and a pair of RBI hits in the eighth, which allowed Montgomery back in the ballgame.

The Braves managed to get the go-ahead run to 3rd base in the 9th before Rosamond struck out to end the threat. The Madison native did chip in his team-leading 12th homerun in the 4th and is now tied with Yunel Escobar with 39 RBIs. Joshua Arteaga also launched a long ball, a solo shot in the 7th. Arteaga has just 3 hits in his last 14 at-bats and they are all Homeruns.

In the South Division Standings, the Braves are now a game and a half back of 4th place Birmingham and 8 games behind 1st place Jacksonville.

The Braves continue a five game set in Montgomery, Alabama at Riverwalk Stadium as they take on the Montgomery Biscuits, the AA Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, in game four of the series. First Pitch is set for 7:05 PM (CT). The Braves are scheduled to send LHP Matt Harrison (2-2, 3.92 ERA) to the hill, while the Biscuits are scheduled to counter with LHP Mike Prochaska (2-3, 5.60 ERA). The Braves ended a seven game losing streak at Riverwalk Stadium as Michael Rosamond deliverd a bases-clearing triple in the 6th and scored later on a passed ball to plate the eventual winning run in front of an announced crowd of 6,898 at Riverwalk Stadium. The Braves also put an end to Andy Sonnanstine's 9 game win streak.

Chris Waters (7-10, 4.41 ERA) tossed five very effective innings before running into trouble in the sixth. He gave up two walks to start the inning (his first two of the game) and then a towering 3-run homerun to Justin Ruggiano. He then wriggled off the hook and turned it over to the bullpen in the seventh. Arthur Santos pitched two scoreless innings of relief for his 7th hold of the season, while Zach Schreiber allowed two singles but struck out Jeremy Owens on a called third strike with the tying run 90 feet away for his 16th save of the season.
